Milbury Case Study - Waste Facility

PADWORTH WASTE FACILITY IS REALISED WITH A PRECAST SOLUTION

Precast and prestressed concrete systems are playing a vital role in the realisation of the new Padworth Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) in Berkshire. Milbury Systems, part of Eleco Plc, is providing its specialist expertise to design, manufacture and install a range of units for Vinci Construction in a contract worth over £1m. Vertical cantilever panels, (push walls), ground beams and slotted panels have all been designed, manufactured and installed by Milbury Systems. Milbury provided an integrated design and delivery service to Vinci Construction, ensuring the client's exacting standards were delivered.

Vertical cantilever panels were the preferred choice for the retaining walls at the site. They are the ideal solution for creating a retaining wall with no framework and no protrusions that can cause an obstruction. Instead a perfect 90° wall to floor joint eliminates the potential damage points between the loading shovel and wall.

The new facility comprises a visitor and administration building, a waste transfer station, a materials recycling facility for processing recyclable waste, in-vessel composting for the recycling of garden and food waste, a mini household waste recycling centre to provide a facility that will offer a variety of recycling options for the community and associated infrastructure and external works.

The new site is designed to significantly improve recycling and composting rates in west Berkshire, improve the management of waste and help to meet statutory targets for recycling. "All local authorities are under pressure to reduce their waste to landfill," explains Paul Eaton of Milbury Systems, "The design and development of facilities such as the Padworth IWMF is vital in the delivery of these statutory obligations. Milbury Systems is able to provide technical expertise in the development of designs that provide our clients with cost effective, sustainable solutions that help to meet these needs in a timely way." The use of precast concrete solutions has improved the construction programme by eliminating the need for wet concrete trades onsite.
